Target Audience:
This training is intended for attorneys representing children in child protective proceedings.

Training Description:
This training is designed as an introduction for attorneys who are new to the LGAL role, as well as a refresher for experienced LGALs. Participants will review the statutory responsibilities and discuss strategies to fulfill the requirements; including conducting an independent investigation, accessing case information, monitoring service plan implementation, and working with children to effectively advocate their best interests. In addition, participants will learn about attachment in infants and toddlers, understanding and eliciting meaningful testimony about parent-child interactions, and ICWA, MIFPA, and the best interests of Indian Children.

Is registration required?
Yes. Registration is required and on-site registration is not available. Please do not register to attend this training unless you have scheduling flexibility and have received the necessary authorization to attend. Excessive nonattendance without prior cancellation will result in limited access to future CWS training events.

Do I have to print and bring my registration confirmation to the event?
No. There will be a sign in sheet at the SCAO-CWS registration desk outside of the meeting room.

The name on the registration doesn't match the attendee. Is that okay?
No. Please use the attendee's name only.

When do I receive a Certificate of Attendance?
All attendees will receive a Certificate of Attendance via email within one week of the training. The certificates are for proof of attendance and tracking of participation hours.

What attire do you recommend?
Room temperature can fluctuate throughout the day. Please plan accordingly and dress in layers.

Is food provided?
Lunch will be generously provided to participants within State of Michigan meal rates. Due to grant restrictions, we are unable to provide breakfast or snacks. Additional meals and snacks are the responsibility of the participant. What meeting room will the training be in?
The training will be held in the VT-5OO-CD meeting rooms on the first floor of the Schoolcraft College VistaTech Center. Please use the front/main enterance to the building.

The Child Welfare Services (CWS) department is part of the Michigan State Court Administrative Office (SCAO). CWS provides assistance to circuit court family divisions on child welfare matters, including child protective proceedings, foster care, adoption, termination of parental rights, permanency outcomes, and data collection and analysis. CWS administers the Michigan Court Improvement Program (CIP), the Foster Care Review Board Program (FCRB), and the training program for the Governor’s Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect. CWS provides numerous multi-disciplinary trainings each year on a variety of child welfare issues.
